Why a central base
A pedestal carries the top from the middle, so no corner legs get in the way of knees and chairs. Arketipo's Icon sets a marble top on a single weighted pyramid of metal. Calligaris's Cameo uses a narrow column on a broad base plate, and Connubia's Planet a central pedestal on a round floor plate.
One support or two
Some long tops use two supports instead of one. Calligaris's Twins uses two curved metal sheets, and Bonaldo's Taijitu two elliptical elements turned in opposite directions. Cattelan Italia's bases are sculptures in steel, in embossed or brushed finishes. Arketipo's Icon carries a top about 98 in long on its single pedestal. Ask for the drawing so you can see how far the top reaches beyond the base.
Sizes and seats
Where the houses give seats, a round 140 cm top (55 in) seats 6. At 160 cm (63 in) it seats 7, and at 180 cm (71 in), 8. A rectangular 200 × 120 cm top (79 × 47 in) seats 8, and 240 × 120 cm (94 × 47 in) seats 10. Pedestal tables here reach 300 × 150 cm (118 × 59 in) and 320 × 138 cm (126 × 54 in), each seating 14. Most stand 75 cm high, about 29.5 in.
Pedestals that extend
With a central base, the base can stay put while the table extends. On Calligaris's Cameo Extendable, side leaves open in stages while the pedestal leaves the perimeter open. Its Apian opens by hand with two side leaves, up to 300 cm (118 in). Calligaris's Orbital swings two leaves out automatically and, the house says, seats up to ten. Cattelan Italia's Linus Keramik Drive opens on a curved steel pedestal set on a floor plate.
Care and ordering
Care follows the top. Cattelan Italia cleans ceramic with a wet sponge and mild detergent, and keeps abrasives off glass. For a lacquered metal base, it advises a slightly damp soft cloth and no solvents. These tables are made to order, typically 12–16 weeks.
