Choosing a Calligaris table, fixed or extending.
Fixed or extending
Calligaris began in Manzano in 1923, making wooden chairs, and its tables are built around how people gather. Many families, such as Axiom, Calla, Sandy, Twins and Yoroi, come in both fixed and extending versions. Fixed rectangular tops run about 200 cm (79 in) or 250 cm (98 in) long, and Axiom also comes at 300 cm (118 in). Many extending versions start at 165 cm (65 in) and open in stages to about 95 in. The 200 cm versions of Sunshine, Twins and Yoroi open from about 79 to 118 in.
How they open
On Axiom and Calla, leaves open at the sides while the central base stays in place, so no leg lands at a seat. On Duca, the frame slides out with two legs, and the leaf lifts and turns into position. Calligaris says Orbital's automatic mechanism opens in one smooth movement and seats up to ten. Cyclone turns from round to oval on a patented mechanism and seats up to eight. Boma has a 60 cm (24 in) assisted flip extension.
Shapes and bases
Beyond rectangles, there are round tops of about 55 and 63 in, ovals, softly rounded shapes and a rounded square in Nogu. The base sets the look: crossed sheet metal on Axiom, teardrop-section legs on Sandy, a grooved pedestal on Yoroi, solid ash on Abrey. The round Icaro table can add a raised Lazy Susan in the center. Each version has its own code, so quote the code when you ask about a table.
Tops and their care
Calligaris says its ceramics, made from natural raw materials, resist heat, stains and scratches and are easy to clean. Its glass, including ceramic glass, is described as strong, safe and easy to clean. Solid wood and wood veneer are protected by special coatings that act as a barrier against stains. Calligaris is FSC certified. Several families also offer solid wood tops.
