Let's DesignHow to put together a modern dining room
Choose the table first: its shape and length decide how many people sit, how the room flows and what the light above it should be. Then choose the chairs for how they sit, not only how they look, since a dinner lasts hours. Nothing here is sold as a set, so a Cattelan Italia or Bontempi table can take Calligaris, Connubia or Peressini Casa chairs, a Mater stool can stand at the counter beside them, and a Reflex or Tomasella sideboard can finish the wall. Mixing two chair designs at one table, armchairs at the ends and side chairs along the sides, is common. Our designers check every pairing, table height against seat height, before it is quoted.
Tops, bases and chair covers
A ceramic top is the most forgiving: heat, scratches and wine leave no mark and it needs no sealing. Marble is the warmest and most individual, and asks for coasters and an occasional seal. Tempered glass keeps a room open and shows fingerprints; wood is the most traditional and the easiest to refinish. Bases come in steel, brushed or painted metal, wood and sculpted glass, and many tables extend with a mechanism hidden in the frame. Chairs come in fabric, leather, faux leather for a busy family and molded shells for a lighter look, with frames in wood or metal; several of the houses make their chairs to contract grade, built for restaurants. Samples of every top and cover are at our showrooms and travel to your door.
Table size, chair count and the light above
Allow about 24 inches of table edge per person and at least 36 inches between the table and the nearest wall or sideboard so chairs pull out. A table 79 inches long seats six comfortably, 94 inches seats eight; a round table of 48 to 60 inches seats four to six and keeps conversation easy. Chair seats sit about 18 to 19 inches high for a table top at 29 to 30, with 10 to 12 inches between the two. A pendant hangs 30 to 36 inches above the top and measures one half to two thirds of the table's width. Order two chairs more than you seat every day. How do I match dining chairs to a dining table?
Allow about 24 inches of table width per chair and 12 inches between the seat and the underside of the top. Most of the tables here come in several lengths and the chairs in several heights, so we check the pairing for you before quoting. At our showrooms you can sit at the actual table with the actual chair.
Are the tables and chairs sold as sets?
No. Every piece is ordered on its own, so you can pair a Cattelan Italia table with Calligaris or Connubia chairs, or mix two chair designs at one table. Your quote lists each piece with its size, finish and lead time.
