Choosing a ceramic dining table, from top to base.

What a ceramic top is

Cattelan Italia makes its ceramic from clay, granite and ceramic particles that are ground wet, compacted and fired. Bontempi describes its marble-effect ceramics as pressed and fired at up to 1,200 to 1,400°C until they vitrify. Bontempi says the result is water-repellent and very resistant, and that grease does not harm it as it harms natural marble. Many tops copy a marble or a stone, and some looks come in both matte and glossy. Weighing ceramic against a top sold as sintered stone? Compare the two makers' sheets: what the slab is made of, its thickness and its edge.

Sizes and seating

Many product pages give a seat count for each size. A rectangular 200 × 120 cm table (79 × 47 in) seats 8. At 240 × 120 cm (94 × 47 in) it seats 10. At 300 × 120 cm (118 × 47 in) it seats 12. Round tops run from 140 cm (55 in) for 6 people to 180 cm (71 in) for 8. Most tables stand 74 to 75 cm high, about 29 in. Measure the room with the chairs pulled out, not only the table's footprint.

Bases, edges and leaves

A pedestal or central base keeps the edge free for chairs, which suits round and oval tops. Several round tables offer a Lazy Susan, a turning tray set in the center. On extending tables, the leaf is not always ceramic. Cattelan Italia's Boulevard Keramik Drive has a lacquered MDF leaf, and several Connubia tables use melamine leaves. Others, such as Cattelan Italia's Eliot Keramik Drive, carry ceramic leaves to match the top. Edge profiles and top thickness change by house and size, so read the drawing for the edge you will see.

Care

Cattelan Italia's care notes are simple. Clean a ceramic top with a wet sponge and a mild detergent. Do not use abrasive products or a steam cleaner. Wipe fresh stains quickly, because a stain left for a long time can work into the pores. For a set stain, Cattelan suggests rubbing in baking soda mixed with water, then wiping it off with a wet sponge.

Ordering

Every table on this page is made to order, typically 12–16 weeks. When you request a quote, name the size, the top finish and the base finish. Ask about the edge, the leaf material on extending models, and delivery to your door anywhere in the 48 contiguous states. Plan a visit to see tables in person in Royal Oak, MI or Troy, MI.
