Choosing a ceramic coffee table, top, height and group.
Why ceramic in the living room
A coffee table sees mugs, feet and the odd hot dish. Calligaris says its ceramics resist heat, stains and scratches and are easy to clean. Bontempi describes marble-effect ceramics as fired until they vitrify, water-repellent, and unharmed by grease. Many tops here copy marble or stone, as on Cattelan Italia's Keramik tables. Others show the clay itself. Moroso's Clay sets handmade glazed tiles in a wood frame, and Mogg's Dune is stoneware through and through.
Heights and groups
Many ceramic coffee tables come in families of sizes and heights, meant to stand alone or overlap. Sovet's Slim comes at fixed heights of 24, 37 or 46 cm (9, 15 or 18 in). Tomasella's Nemo stands 26.4 or 31.4 cm high. Cattelan Italia's Albert Keramik and Billy Keramik offer several sizes and heights to combine. Bonaldo's Harpe has seven size-and-height pairings.
Shapes and sizes
Rectangles of 120 × 60 cm (47 × 24 in) are the most common size, and rounds often measure 100 cm (39 in) across. Tomasella's Nemo is broad, at 150 × 73 cm (59 × 29 in). Some tops go irregular. Bonaldo's Aspen has an inward curve so two pieces fit together, and Sovet's Trium is an organic shape on three legs. Sovet lists load limits for some tops, such as 30 kg (66 lb) evenly spread on Trium.
Extras and care
Some tables add a second level. Cattelan Italia's Biplane has a ceramic lower shelf, and Bonaldo's Arbor can add a metal one. Cattelan Italia's Arena Keramik Bond comes with a small glass table that swivels beside it. Pianca's Haik is molded ceramic for indoor or outdoor use. For care, Cattelan Italia advises a wet sponge and mild detergent, no abrasive products and no steam cleaner. Wipe fresh stains quickly, since an old stain can work into the pores.
