Choosing a round dining table, by the seat.
Diameter and seats
A round table is sized by the number of people around it. Where the houses give seats, a 100 cm top (39 in) seats 4 and 118 cm (46 in) seats 5. At 140 cm (55 in) it seats 6, at 160 cm (63 in) 7, and at 180 cm (71 in) 8. The largest, at 220 cm (87 in), seats 10. Most stand 75 cm high, about 29.5 in. Measure the room with chairs pulled out all the way around.
Pedestal or legs
About half the round tables here stand on a single pedestal or central base. Connubia's Cocktail table stands on a round base that keeps the edge free of legs. Some pedestals stand on a floor plate, like Connubia's Planet. Others spread into sculpture: wings on Calligaris's Icaro, a helix on its Vortex. Reflex Angelo builds bases from Murano glass under clear tops. Bonaldo's Geometric stands on four teardrop-shaped legs instead.
A turning center
Many large round tables offer a center that turns, so dishes pass without reaching. Cattelan Italia's Keramik Round tables take an optional Lazy Susan. Bonaldo's Mellow ST sets a rotating ceramic or marble center in a wood veneer top. Calligaris's Icaro can add a raised Lazy Susan, and Cattelan Italia's Ker-Wood tables have a "T" version whose ceramic center turns.
Tops, extensions and care
Tops come in glass, ceramic, wood and marble. Some rounds also grow: Calligaris's Cyclone turns from round to oval and, the house says, seats up to eight. For care, Cattelan Italia advises a wet sponge and mild detergent on ceramic, without abrasives or steam. Pianca suggests vinegar diluted in plenty of water on glass. For marble, Pianca advises water and a mild cleaner, and rinsing off coffee, wine or oil at once.
