Choosing an extendable table, mechanism first.
Where the extra length comes from
Start with the mechanism, because you will use it more than you think. Some tables add a leaf at each end, like Sovet's Arkos, or at either side on its own, like Calligaris's Cartesio. Others keep the leaf inside. On Calligaris's Omnia, you pull the frame and the stored leaf turns into line with the top. Calligaris's Orbital is automatic: metal arms swing two leaves out from under the top. Bontempi's Giro opens from round on a synchronized telescopic mechanism. Lago's Air leaves slide out like drawers and attach to the top with magnets.
Legs or a central base
Watch where the legs go when the table opens. On Calligaris's Duca and Omnia, two legs travel out with the frame, so they stay at the corners. On Calligaris's Axiom, Calla and Sunshine, a central base stays put while leaves open at the sides. That keeps the seating edge free of legs at both lengths. On a four-leg table, check where the legs fall at full length. Ask for a drawing of the open table if the product page does not show one.
Sizes and seats
Pick the closed size for every day and check the open size against your room. Cattelan Italia's Drive tables list seats at both lengths. A 160 × 90 cm (63 × 35 in) top opens to 236 cm (93 in), seating 6, then 10. The 200 × 106 cm version opens to 294 cm (116 in), seating 8, then 12. Calligaris's Sunshine runs from about 79 to 118 in. Most stand 74 to 75 cm high, about 29 in.
Tops, leaves and care
Tops come in ceramic, glass and wood, and the leaf does not always match the top. Tonelli's Livingstone uses a laminated, tempered-glass top with glass leaves on stainless-steel hinges. Lago's Loto has leaves that can come in a different material from the main top. For care, Cattelan Italia advises a wet sponge and mild detergent on ceramic, and no abrasive materials on glass. Its notes add that wood keeps changing in appearance as it ages.
