Choosing a ceramic extendable table, closed and open.
How these tables open
Each house solves the extension its own way. Sovet's Arkos adds a leaf at each end, and Bonaldo's Prora has two side extensions that open on their own. Calligaris's Boma opens a folding leaf, taking the table from about 51 to 75 in. Connubia's Artic Fast opens like a book on aluminum runners, and its Band tables use a semi-automatic mechanism. Round tops grow too. Calligaris says Cyclone splits into two sliding sections that reveal a leaf stored at the center, turning round into oval.
Sizes closed and open
Think about the table you live with every day, then the one you set for guests. Closed tops start near 100 cm (39 in), and the longest open to about 320 cm (126 in). Cattelan Italia's Eliot Keramik Drive goes from 160 to 236 cm (63 to 93 in), seating 6 closed and 10 open. Its 200 cm version opens to 294 cm (116 in), seating 8 and then 12. Most stand 74 to 75 cm high, about 29 in.
Is the leaf ceramic too?
Not always, and it changes how the open table looks. Cattelan Italia's Eliot and Gotham Keramik Drive use ceramic leaves, and Connubia's Artic Fast carries the top's veining across its leaf. Connubia's Artic, Eminence and Giove use melamine leaves, even with a ceramic top. Cattelan Italia's Boulevard Keramik Drive has a lacquered MDF leaf in the base's finish. Pianca's Soffio Up pairs a stoneware top with a leaf in matching matte lacquer. Check the product page or the spec sheet for the leaf material.
Care
Cattelan Italia's advice for ceramic tops covers ceramic leaves too. Clean with a wet sponge and a mild detergent, and never with abrasive products or a steam cleaner. Wipe fresh stains quickly, since an old stain can work into the pores. For a lacquered leaf, Cattelan Italia advises a slightly damp soft cloth and no solvents.
Ordering
These tables are made to order, typically 12–16 weeks. When you request a quote, give the closed and open size, the top finish and the base finish. Ask how the leaf is stored when the table is closed, and how many people it seats at each length. We deliver to the 48 contiguous states. Plan a visit to try an extension in person in Royal Oak, MI or Troy, MI.
