Choosing a glass dining table, from top to base.
Which glass
Glass is not one material here. Clear and extra-clear tops, often tempered, put the base on show. Smoked, bronze and amber glass tint the view of the base. Cattelan Italia's Crystalart prints artwork on extra-clear glass, and Reflex's Marmoreflex and Legnoreflex copy marble or wood. Bontempi offers glossy glass and matte lacquered glass. Textured glass is another choice: Arketipo's Gambler uses ribbed glass 10 mm thick, and its Avalon a 12 mm hammered glass.
The base is part of the view
With a clear top, you see the base every time you sit down. Some houses make the base in glass as well. Bonaldo's Botón stands on fused tempered glass, Reflex's Dune 72 on curved glass, and FontanaArte's Teso, by Renzo Piano, on four glass legs. Reflex's Laguna 72 uses hand-worked fused glass for both top and bases. Others set glass over carved stone, forged iron or leather-covered supports. Sovet, which began in glass processing, offers many of its tables in both glass and ceramic.
Sizes and seats
Where the houses give seats, a 200 × 100 or 200 × 120 cm top (79 × 39 or 47 in) seats 8. A 240 × 120 cm table (94 × 47 in) seats 10, and 300 × 120 cm (118 × 47 in) seats 12. Round tops of 130 to 140 cm (51 to 55 in) seat 6, and 180 cm (71 in) seats 8. A few square tables, such as 150 cm (59 in), seat 8. Most stand 73 to 75 cm high, about 29 in.
Care
Cattelan Italia notes that all its glass, tempered or not, meets safety requirements. It warns that abrasive materials can damage the surface for good. Pianca suggests vinegar diluted in plenty of water, or a glass cleaner. Calligaris describes its glass as strong, safe and easy to clean.
Ordering
These tables are made to order, typically 12–16 weeks. When you request a quote, name the size, the glass and its tint, and the base finish. Ask about thickness and the edge, such as Cattelan Italia's beveled edges or Reflex's shaped Wing edge. We deliver to the 48 contiguous states. Plan a visit to see pieces in person in Royal Oak, MI or Troy, MI.
