Choosing a glass pendant or chandelier, by the glass.
Which glass
The glass shapes the light, so read the description closely. Many shades here are borosilicate glass, as on Cattelan Italia's Apollo and Bloom, Bontempi's Rain and Sferatus, and Reflex's Bulles. Bonaldo's Gocce and Sovet's Willow use Pyrex. Some glass is cast or fused, like Reflex's Angels and Fusion and Tonelli's Cathedral. FontanaArte's 0024, by Gio Ponti, stacks discs of clear tempered glass. Reflex's Leaf has hand-engraved glass leaves, and its Dreamcatcher Morpho hand-painted glass butterflies. Smoked glass softens the view of the light source, as on Cattelan Italia's Sunset, while clear glass leaves it in view.
One pendant, a group or a chandelier
Decide whether one fixture lights the table or several share the work. Single pendants include Flos's My Sphere and Cattelan Italia's Coimbra. Some are made to hang in groups at different heights, like Sovet's Willow and Cattelan Italia's Sablier. Chandeliers spread light from one point: Reflex's Diamante uses eighteen LED points, and Cattelan Italia's Bloom ends steel branches in glass spheres. David Chipperfield's chandeliers for FontanaArte come in single round, double round and oval forms. Marset's Fris has glass tubes you can rotate to aim each light.
Light, dimming and ratings
Most pendants here have built-in LED, and some take a bulb. Dimming varies by maker, from standard dimmers to systems such as DALI and 0–10 V. Some of Moooi's models also work with Zigbee and Matter. Where listed, most are rated IP20, for dry locations only. Marset's Fris is rated for damp locations, and its Santorini Outdoor for wet ones. Many carry UL or ETL listing. Tell your electrician the dimming type before you order.
Weight and care
Glass is heavy, so check the weight against your ceiling. Flos's Luce Orizzontale weighs from about 62 to 90 lb, depending on size. For cleaning, Pianca suggests vinegar diluted in plenty of water, or a glass cleaner. Cattelan Italia warns that abrasive materials can damage glass for good.
Ordering
These pieces are made to order, typically 12–16 weeks. When you request a quote, name the model, size, glass color and finish, the light source and the dimming you use. Send the ceiling height and what the light will hang over. We deliver to the 48 contiguous states. Plan a visit in Royal Oak, MI or Troy, MI to talk through glass lighting.
