Choosing a Foscarini pendant, material by material.
Glass blown by hand
Foscarini began on Murano in 1981 and still works from the Venice area, and glass runs through many of its pendants. Chouchin, by Ionna Vautrin, has a glossy hand-blown shade. Ludovica and Roberto Palomba's Rituals uses white blown glass with fine horizontal markings, and their Gregg an acid-etched shade shaped like a pebble. Hand-blowing leaves small differences. Hoba is mouth-blown in an open mold and varies slightly, and Tonda's sphere fades from white to clear with slight variations from the blowing.
Many other materials
Foscarini's collection grew from material experiments, so compare shades by the light they give. Aplomb's shade is thin, hand-poured concrete. Marc Sadler's Twiggy, Tite and Tress use fiberglass composites, and Tite wraps its fabric in black carbon thread. Big Bang interlocks translucent methacrylate planes, and Caboche Plus hangs a ring of acrylic (PMMA) spheres. Spokes is a cage of fine steel rods that throws patterns, and Allegro gathers slender aluminum rods. Fregio carries glazed ceramic reliefs cast from historic molds of a Faenza workshop, and Pli folds Italian cotton-fiber paper.
LED or bulb, and dimming
Every Foscarini pendant on this page is dimmable. Some have built-in LED, and many more take a bulb, mostly in an E26 socket. Several, like Chouchin Reverse, come in both bulb and LED versions. LED versions are mostly 2700 K, with some at 3000 K, and most list a color rendering index over 90. Some LED models use 1–10 V or phase-cut dimming, so match the dimmer to the model. Most carry ETL listing for the United States and Canada.
Size and weight
Many designs come in several sizes; Gregg alone runs from small through large. Check the weight as well as the size. Most weigh between 2 and 20 lb, but Plass Grande is about 51 lb and Big Bang XL LED about 83 lb. The LED version of a lamp can weigh more than the bulb version, as on Chouchin 1 Reverse. Confirm the ceiling and box can carry the fixture before you order.
