Choosing a modular sofa, piece by piece.
How the pieces fit
A modular sofa is a set of elements: end seats with one arm, armless centers, corners, chaises and ottomans. You choose the pieces and the order. How they join matters if you may rearrange later. Lago's Air uses a hook-and-release system, so seats, backs and arms come apart and go back together in new ways. Moroso's Highlands links its modules beneath the base, and several Natuzzi Italia families join theirs with removable hooks.
Against the wall or in the room
Some systems are made to float. Bonaldo's Ever More can form a seating island in the middle of a room. Lago's Londy has a finished back, so it can stand away from the wall. Calligaris's Axis adds angled elements, so a layout can turn at something other than a right angle. If the back of the sofa will be seen, ask whether it is upholstered.
Backs and arms that move
Many modules adjust. On Calligaris's Equipe, the back moves to deepen the seat and the arm has three positions. Favola's backs shift between two positions, and Pandora pairs a pull-out seat with a seven-position headrest. Arketipo's Smooth Operator has back cushions with three or four positions. Lago's Sand offers weighted backrests you can move around. Calligaris's Norma adds an electric pull-out footrest, run from buttons in the arm.
Sizes and cushions
Module widths vary within one family; Calligaris's Layla comes in 80 cm and 104 cm seats (31 and 41 in). Where houses list seat heights, most sit between 40 and 45 cm, about 16 to 18 in. Arketipo offers spacers that raise Smooth Operator from 42 to 45 cm. Fillings range from foam to goose down. Lago uses down on Air Slim and Happening, and Calligaris's Layla fills its backs with down and small technopolymer balls.
Covers, care and ordering
Many modular sofas have covers that come off. Pianca's advice for fabric covers: brush off dust with a very soft brush, and check the data sheet before washing. Wash covers inside out with a mild, bleach-free detergent, do not spin them, and dry them flat. For leather, Natuzzi Italia says to dust with a dry white cloth and blot spills at once. These sofas are made to order, typically 12–16 weeks. When you request a quote, list the modules from left to right with the cover and color. We deliver to the 48 contiguous states. Natuzzi Italia is on our floors in Royal Oak, MI and Troy, MI. Plan a visit to sit in one before you choose.
