Start with the designer
Moroso has made upholstered furniture since 1952, near Udine in northeastern Italy, and works closely with its designers. Patricia Urquiola designed the largest group here, including Gentry, Lowland, Chamfer, Cuadra-Soft and Shanghai Tip. Diesel Living's Nebula Nine is about deep seats and oversized cushions. Antonio Citterio's Rich Cushion has a button-tufted back, and Ron Arad's Do-Lo-Rez is a landscape of blocks at different heights. Massimo Iosa Ghini's Big Mama has flared arms on beech feet.
A complete sofa or a composition
Some designs come as finished two- and three-seat sofas, like Big Mama and Rich. Many others are built from elements. Chamfer offers straight sofas, corners and chaises in two depths, with linking devices supplied. Lowland combines separate seats, backs and arms into open or enclosed layouts. Gentry comes as complete sofas and as modules. Measure the room and decide on the depth first, since some families offer two.
Cushions and comfort
Fillings change how a Moroso sofa sits. Gentry's seat cushions are feather-filled around a polyurethane insert, and Gentry Extra Light offers feather or polyester with memory foam. Nebula Nine comes with fiber-filled or goose-down cushions. Shanghai Tip has goose-down seat cushions, and its backs raise or lower on steel mechanisms, as Highlands' backs and arms do. Cuadra-Soft pads a steel frame with elastic webbing using foam and recycled polyester fiber. Where Moroso lists seat heights, most are 39 to 42 cm (15 to 17 in).
Covers and sleep
Many Moroso sofas have covers that come off, but the details differ by model. Big Mama's fabric covers come off, but its leather version is fixed. On Rich, the cushion covers come off while the main upholstery stays. On Lowland, you remove the arms and back to take the covers off. For a sofa bed, Nebula Night adds a polyurethane mattress to the Nebula design.
