Choosing a modular outdoor sofa, built for the weather.
Frame first
The frame decides how a sofa handles the weather and how it looks. Talenti builds many of its systems on aluminum, and LaPalma's Add stands on recycled die-cast aluminum legs. Vondom molds its shells in polyethylene, as on Faz, Gatsby and Ulm. Wood platforms appear too: Accoya on Talenti's Elton, Itaca and Venice, and solid iroko on Arketipo's Santos and Ditre Italia's Tao. Several Talenti systems, such as Coral, Cliff and Slam//Rope, wrap the back and arms in synthetic rope.
Cushions that cope with rain
Ask what happens when a cushion gets wet. Many Talenti cushions use quick-drying foam, and Pianca's Levante Out uses an open-cell foam that lets water drain through. Ditre Italia's Papilo sets its foam on a Batyline support so water can pass. LaPalma puts a breathable, water-resistant layer beneath UV-stable fabric. Many covers come off for washing. Even so, Arketipo advises covering the Santos upholstery against prolonged or heavy rain.
Planning the layout
Outdoor systems can come with many pieces. Talenti's Allure has twenty module options, Cliff seventeen, and Argo//Wood fourteen, some with built-in tables. Corners come at different angles: Vondom's Faz turns at 45 or 90 degrees, and Pasadena at 90 or 60. Some backs move. LaPalma's Add has predrilled holes for several back positions, and Ditre Italia's Sanders Air uses weighted backrests you can reposition. LaPalma's Plus also comes back-to-back, with seats facing two ways.
Through a Michigan winter
Plan where the sofa spends the cold months. Talenti recommends cleaning aluminum and steel frames and storing them in a sheltered place over winter. It notes that very low temperatures can affect the colored coating. Vondom rates its polyethylene from −60°C to +80°C (−76°F to 176°F) and still advises covering each piece. Store cushions dry. Talenti suggests washing acrylic fabric with lukewarm water and a neutral detergent, then letting it air dry away from direct heat.
Ordering
These sofas are made to order, typically 12–16 weeks. When you request a quote, send a plan of the terrace and list the modules in order. Name the frame finish, the cushion fabric and color, and any tables. Ask about covers and winter storage. We deliver to the 48 contiguous states. Plan a visit in Royal Oak, MI or Troy, MI to talk through outdoor seating.
