Choosing an oval dining table, length without corners.
Sizes
An oval gives you the length of a rectangle with a continuous curved edge. Sovet's Flûte Elliptical comes at 160 × 100 cm (63 × 39 in) or 180 × 130 cm (71 × 51 in). LaPalma's Rondò is 180 × 110 cm (71 × 43 in) and 73 cm high. Calligaris's ovals, such as Calla, Cameo, Sandy, Twins and Yoroi, run about 200 cm (79 in). For the terrace, Talenti's James reaches 260 × 105 cm (102 × 41 in) and seats ten.
One base or two
Many ovals stand on one central support. Calligaris's Cameo uses a narrow column that leaves the edge open for chairs. Sovet's Flûte rests on a metal base that flares at the floor, and LaPalma's Rondò on a slender column with a round foot. Some longer ovals spread the load over two supports. Cappellini's Dolmen stands on two semicircular stone bases, and Ditre Italia's Doon on two matching elements set close together. Reflex Angelo offers single and double Murano-glass bases under round and oval tops.
Tops and materials
Oval tops come in glass, marble, wood and ceramic. Cappellini's Dolmen pairs a thick stone top with bases in the same stone, in Carrara and other marbles. Natuzzi Italia's Uragano sets an oval glass top on layered solid olive wood, hand polished with natural oil. Bontempi's Barone, Etro and Fusion come in fixed and extending versions. Calligaris's Orbital extends automatically, swinging two leaves out from under the top while keeping the oval outline. Calligaris says it seats up to ten.
Care
Follow the care notes for the top you choose. Pianca suggests vinegar diluted in plenty of water for glass. For marble, it advises water and a mild cleaner, never harsh products, and rinsing off coffee, wine or oil at once. Cattelan Italia cleans ceramic with a wet sponge and mild detergent, with no abrasives or steam cleaner.
