Dining Tables, by house.
How to choose a modern Italian dining table
Decide three things: the shape, the size and whether it extends. A rectangle seats the most along a wall; a round or oval table keeps everyone in one conversation and suits a square room; an extending table serves the family on weekdays and a dinner for ten on Sunday, with the leaves stored in the frame. Then look at the base. A pedestal frees the legs and seats more; four legs read lighter; a sculptural base, in steel, wood or glass, makes the table the room's centerpiece. The houses here are the Italian table makers: Cattelan Italia and Bontempi for sculptural bases and ceramic tops, Calligaris for extending tables, Reflex, Sovet and Tonelli for glass, Caracole for a classic line.
Ceramic, marble, glass or wood: which top
Ceramic is the most forgiving top there is: it takes heat, scratches, wine and lemon without a mark and never needs sealing, and the houses print it to look like marble, stone or concrete. Marble is the warmest and most individual, no two slabs alike, and asks for coasters and an occasional seal. Tempered glass, clear, smoked or back-painted, keeps a room open and shows fingerprints. Wood, in oak, walnut or ash, is the most traditional and the easiest to refinish over a lifetime. Bases come in painted or brushed steel, wood, lacquer and sculpted glass, and extending mechanisms are built into the frame so the leaves travel with the table. Samples of every top are at our showrooms and can be mailed.
How big a table your room will take
Allow about 24 inches of edge per person and 36 inches between the table and the nearest wall, sideboard or island so chairs pull out and people pass. A table 79 inches long seats six comfortably, 94 inches seats eight, 110 seats ten; a round table of 48 inches seats four, 60 inches seats six. Extending tables are quoted in their closed and open lengths, so measure the room for the open one. Table height runs 29 to 30 inches for chairs with seats at 18 to 19, and the pendant above hangs 30 to 36 inches over the top at half to two thirds of its width. Send us the room's measurements and we draw the table at both lengths, with the chairs pulled out.

What size dining table do I need?
Allow about 24 inches of table edge per person and at least 36 inches between the table and the wall or sideboard for chairs to pull out. A table 79 inches long seats six comfortably; 94 inches seats eight. Most tables here come in several lengths, and many extend.
Which top is right: glass, ceramic, marble or wood?
Ceramic is the most forgiving: it resists heat, scratches and stains and needs no sealing. Marble is the warmest to look at and asks for coasters. Glass keeps a room open and shows fingerprints. Wood is the most traditional and the easiest to refinish. We have samples of each at the showrooms and can mail them.
How long does a dining table take to arrive?
