Let's DesignHow to furnish a living room with Italian design
Start with the piece the room is built around, almost always the sofa or sectional, and let its size and seat depth set everything else: the coffee table at two thirds of its length, an armchair or two at the same seat height, a side table within reach of each seat. Then decide what the room is for. A family room wants deep seats, washable covers and a low table that takes feet; a formal room can carry a tighter sofa and a sculptural glass table. The houses on this page each have a character: Moroso and Cappellini for sculptural seating, Natuzzi Italia and Ditre Italia for deep, tailored comfort, Cattelan Italia and Reflex for tables in glass, ceramic and marble, Tomasella and Lago for storage and shelving, Caracole for a classic American line. Mixing them is normal, and it is what our designers do.
Leather, fabric, glass, stone and wood
Full-grain leather wears in rather than out and suits pets and children; it is the easiest cover to live with for many years. Fabric gives more color and a softer sit, and many of the sofas here come with removable, cleanable covers. For tables, ceramic and tempered glass take heat, spills and glasses without marking, marble is the warmest to look at and asks for coasters, and wood and lacquer bring the room together. Each house offers its own range of covers and finishes, and nearly every piece is made to order in the one you choose. We keep swatches and finish samples at both showrooms and send them to your door anywhere in the country, because a photograph cannot show how a material meets your room's light.
Sizing the pieces to the room
Measure before you fall for anything. Leave about 30 inches of walkway around the seating, 18 inches between the sofa and the coffee table, and keep the coffee table within an inch or two of the seat height. A two-seat sofa runs about 70 to 80 inches long, a three-seat sofa 85 to 100, and most come in several lengths; a sectional is planned from your walls, with the chaise on the side that leaves the room open. A rug should reach under the front legs of every seat, with 8 to 12 inches of floor showing around it. Send us a sketch with the room's measurements, doors and windows, and our in-house designers draw the layout and mark the sizes that fit before anything is ordered.
Made to order, delivered to your door
Nearly every piece on this page is made to order by the house itself, in the size and cover you choose, and typically ships in 12–16 weeks. Because each one is tailored, the site shows no prices: request a quote on any piece and a designer prices your exact specification, with delivery included, before any deposit. We deliver white-glove to all 48 contiguous states, carrying the furniture in, unpacking it and setting it in place, and we are an authorized dealer for every house here, so each piece arrives with the maker's own warranty. See the floor samples at our showrooms in Royal Oak, MI, on Woodward Avenue, and in Troy at the Michigan Design Center, or start from anywhere with a photo of your room.

How do I plan a living room around made-to-order Italian furniture?
Start with the sofa or sectional, since its size and seat depth set the room, then add the tables, armchairs and lighting at the same scale. Our in-house designers draft the layout for you, working from your room measurements or a quick photo, and the pieces are then ordered in the sizes and covers that fit.
How long does living room furniture take to arrive?
Most pieces are made to order in Italy or Europe and typically ship in 12–16 weeks. Your quote states the lead time for each piece, and we book white-glove delivery to all 48 contiguous states, with the furniture carried in, unpacked and set in place.
Can I see these pieces in person before ordering?
Yes. Our showrooms in Royal Oak, MI, on Woodward Ave, and in Troy at the Michigan Design Center hold floor samples from the houses on this page, with fabric, leather and finish samples for the rest. If you are outside Michigan, we send swatches and finish samples to your door.
