Choosing an Italian leather armchair, shell, frame and hide.
Made in Italy, and which leather
"Italian leather" names the hide, not where a chair is built. Our product pages name the country where each armchair is made, and for the chairs here it is Italy. Most also come in fabric, and some in faux leather. Cattelan Italia describes its soft leather as natural, with uneven wrinkles and small marks that show its quality. It fades a little over time in direct sun or near heat. Nubuck, a buffed aniline leather, feels like velvet, and Arketipo warns that even water will mark it if not dried at once.
What is under the leather
Armchairs are built in two main ways. Moroso shapes many of its chairs, such as Armada and Ayub, in cold-injected polyurethane over an internal steel frame. Others use wooden frames with seats on elastic webbing, as Nicoline and Ditre Italia do. Cappellini's Dalia pads a fiberglass-and-resin shell. Ask which build a chair has.
Swivel, high back, recline
Swivel bases are common, and some return to their starting position, like Arketipo's Jordan. Cappellini offers Dalia with or without that return. High backs give head support; Moroso's Ayub and Natuzzi Italia's Marlene are two examples. For reclining, see Natuzzi Italia's Re-Vive, which follows your posture with no motor, and its powered recliners. Bonaldo's Avant-Garde can add a matching ottoman.
Size and seat height
Where houses list seat heights, most fall between 40 and 45 cm (16 to 18 in). Some lounge chairs, like LaPalma's Auki, sit at 36 cm (14 in). Check the seat height against your sofa. Measure the chair's full width, including any swivel clearance, before you order.
Care and ordering
Cattelan Italia's care notes for soft leather start simply: dust with a soft, dry cloth. Treat stains at once with soapy water or a mild detergent. Rinse and dry right away, and avoid alcohol, acetone and abrasives. Keep straps, studs and sharp metal away from the leather. These chairs are made to order, typically 12–16 weeks. When you request a quote, give the model, the leather and color, and the base. We deliver to the 48 contiguous states. Natuzzi Italia is on our floors in Royal Oak, MI and Troy, MI. Plan a visit to sit before you choose.
