What the chair is made of
Outdoor chairs here fall into a few families. Molded plastic chairs are light and often stack: Vondom's Africa is fiberglass-reinforced polypropylene, and Connubia's Abby is 100% recycled polypropylene. Metal chairs include Emeco's 1 Inch, in recycled aluminum, and LaPalma's Aria, a stainless-steel frame wrapped in hand-woven cord. Rope backs appear on Cappellini's Gilda Lido and Ditre Italia's Isamu. Wood chairs include Arketipo's Kate in oiled iroko and Bensen's Lean in untreated teak, which changes with weather and time.
Rain and drainage
Water should leave a seat quickly. Emeco perforates its seats and backs so rainwater drains and air passes through. Cappellini's Gilda Lido has a drainage opening in its aluminum seat. Heller's ArcoBellini has a grommet that drains water and can take a securing chain. Cushions are often optional and removable. Sovet's Keyah takes a quick-release cushion. For woven fiber, Talenti advises letting it dry in the sun before cushions go back on.
Heights and stacking
Where houses list them, most seats sit 44 to 48 cm high (17 to 19 in). Most arms sit 63 to 68 cm high (25 to 27 in). Check the arms against your table's edge. Stacking saves space over winter. Emeco's aluminum chairs stack six high, Heller's ArcoBellini eight, and Mater's Ocean four. Sovet rates its Keyah for up to 120 kg (265 lb).
Through a Michigan winter
Plan where the chairs spend the cold months. Talenti recommends cleaning aluminum and steel pieces and storing them in a sheltered place over winter. Vondom rates its polyethylene from −60°C to +80°C (−76°F to 176°F), yet still advises covering each piece. Some chairs are meant for shelter all year: Cappellini places its Juli Re-Plastic in covered areas. Talenti's synthetic rope has a waterproof, UV-resistant outer fiber, and it cleans with a neutral product and a non-abrasive cloth.
