Choosing a marble dining table, knowing the stone.
Natural stone, honestly
Bontempi describes marble as a limestone made mostly of calcium carbonate. Its surface is delicate: it can wear, scratch and stain, and its pores take in liquids and oils. Makers often treat the slabs to help them resist, but the risk of a stain remains. Natural stone varies, too. Pianca warns that a marble's color and look can differ slightly from the sample, and that pieces ordered at different times may not match.
Which marble, and on which table
Many tables here offer marble as one of several tops. Bonaldo's Circus, Cop and Dorian come in wood, ceramic or marble on the same base. Cappellini's Lochness offers Carrara or black Marquinia marble on selected sizes. Arketipo's Elements and Millennium pair wood veneer with natural stone. Love the look but not the upkeep? Sizes and shapes
Rectangular marble tops here run from about 182 to 320 cm (72 to 126 in). Round tops run from 120 to 180 cm (47 to 71 in). Where the houses give seats, 200 × 120 cm (79 × 47 in) seats 8. A 240 × 120 cm top (94 × 47 in) seats 10. A round 140 cm (55 in) top seats 6. Round and oval marble tables often sit on a single pedestal, which keeps the edge free for chairs. Most stand 75 cm high, about 29.5 in.
Care
Pianca's care notes are detailed. Wipe the top with water and a mild cleaner, never with harsh products of very high or very low pH. Its tops are sealed with water-repellent silicone waxes that wear off, so it recommends redoing them with household marble wax. Coffee, wine, oil and ammonia can etch the stone and leave dull spots, so rinse them off at once with plenty of water. Cattelan Italia adds: use products made for natural stone and avoid harsh detergents that dull the surface.
