Moooi Smoke includes Maarten Baas’ dining and lounge chairs with charred wooden frames sealed in epoxy resin.
The burning process leaves individual surface variations across the ornate structures. Foam padding and leather upholstery contrast with the irregular dark wood, shaping the seat and back. Dining versions come with or without arms, while the taller-backed armchair expands the same construction into a lounge form with a buttoned upholstered back.
Maarten Baas graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2002. His work connects conceptual art, craft, furniture, installation and performance. Projects including Smoke, Clay and Real Time investigate familiar objects through changes in materials, construction or use, often developed by hand in his studio.
