Choosing an Italian storage bed, how it opens.
How the storage opens
Most storage beds hide a compartment under the mattress, and the mechanism is the first choice. Many lift the slatted base to reveal it, as on Reflex's Swan and San Marco and Cattelan Italia's Richard. Ditre Italia names two systems. Box lifts the mattress base for storage, and Easy also raises the mattress to make the bed easier to dress. Natuzzi Italia's Briq has a two-position lift that tilts the base up at an angle. Bonaldo's "Open" versions, such as Cuff and Tonight, add storage beneath the sleeping surface.
Storage in the headboard, too
Not all storage sits under the bed. Arketipo's Mayfair Dream has a lined compartment inside the headboard. Lago's Vele hides shelves between its headboard panels. Reflex's Oh XL can add bedside shelves with internal drawers and glass tops. Bonaldo's Nelson L widens the headboard to take bedside tables and drawers. Lago's Gizmo fits a bedroom corner and offers storage or a trundle.
Sizes and height
Many Italian beds are built around metric mattresses. Natuzzi Italia's Cala and Fenice take a 180 × 200 cm base, about 71 × 79 in. Several houses also make US formats: Ditre Italia's Kailua King is 92½ in wide and its Queen 79½ in, both 89¾ in long. Ditre Italia's Puppet comes in King and Queen with optional lift mechanisms. Storage changes the profile, so compare versions. Tomasella offers some beds with floor-level or raised storage bases.
Frames and covers
Tomasella makes many of the storage beds here, in fabric, leather and wood finishes, some with LED lighting. Others are upholstered in leather, faux leather or fabric, and some, like Bonaldo's, have removable covers. Nicoline builds frames from foam-covered plywood over a slatted base. Check whether slats come with the bed: Cattelan Italia includes them, while Reflex lists mattress and slats separately. For Cattelan Italia's lacquered frames, clean with a slightly damp soft cloth and no solvents.
Ordering
These beds are made to order, typically 12–16 weeks. When you request a quote, give the mattress size, metric or US, the storage mechanism, the covering and color. Measure the space beside the bed, so a lifting base or drawers can open fully. We deliver to the 48 contiguous states. Plan a visit to see pieces in person in Royal Oak, MI or Troy, MI.
