Choosing a swivel dining chair, turn, return or roll.
Return or turn freely
The first choice is how the seat moves. On a return swivel, the seat turns and then comes back to face the table. Calligaris's Basil and Holly, Cattelan Italia's Tyler and Connubia's Academy all return. Sovet's Alika offers automatic return on its metal-base version. Other chairs turn freely: Calligaris also makes Basil and Holly in versions that rotate a full 360 degrees.
The base
The base decides the look and how the chair sits on the floor. Many use a four-spoke or star base in aluminum, like Cattelan Italia's "Turn" chairs and LaPalma's Seela and Cut. Casamania's Vad turns on a four-branch metal trestle. LaPalma's Pass S121 and Sovet's Cadira sit on a round plate, and LaPalma's Arco S211 on a solid ash base. Reflex's Swan uses a magnetic turning base. For a chair that rolls, Cattelan Italia's "Wheels" versions add casters, and Bontempi's Chantal offers them as an option.
Heights and fit
Many swivel chairs keep a fixed seat height, though Cappellini's Juli also offers height-adjustable bases. Where houses list them, most seats sit 45 to 47 cm (about 18 in) high. LaPalma's chairs sit at 17¾ to 18 in, and Connubia's Tuka at 20⅛ in. Arm heights run from about 23⅝ in on Connubia's Academy armchair to 27⅜ in on Tuka. Check the arms against the underside of your table. Sovet rates its swivel chairs here for up to 120 kg (265 lb).
Shells and covers
Swivel chairs come upholstered or as molded shells. Connubia's Ops! uses polypropylene or plastic recycled from food packaging. LaPalma's Seela takes seat inserts in polypropylene, wood or fabric that can be replaced, held by four screws. Upholstered versions come in fabric, leather or faux leather. For soft leather, Cattelan Italia says to dust with a soft, dry cloth and treat stains at once with soapy water. Wipe its synthetic leather with a damp cloth.

These chairs are made to order, typically 12–16 weeks. When you request a quote, name the model and base, return or full swivel, the covering and color, and how many chairs. Tell us your table and floor, and whether you want casters. We deliver to the 48 contiguous states. Plan a visit to see pieces in person in Royal Oak, MI or Troy, MI.
