Ocean Bench — Dusty Blue

Jørgen & Nanna Ditzel
Jørgen and Nanna Ditzel were a Danish design couple whose joint studio ran from 1946 until Jørgen's death in 1961. Nanna, born in Copenhagen in 1923, trained as a cabinetmaker before studying at the School of Arts and Crafts and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in furniture design in 1946; she had met Jørgen, trained in upholstery, as a student in 1943, and they exhibited together from 1944. Their studio made interiors, adjustable and multipurpose furniture and furniture for children, and the Hanging Chair of 1959, a rounded wicker seat hung from the ceiling, is their best-known piece; together they won silver medals at the Milan Triennale in 1951 and 1957, gold in 1960, and the Lunning Prize in 1956. Nanna went on alone, designed her Toadstools in 1962, ran the Interspace showroom in London from 1968 and worked until her death in Copenhagen in 2005. Mater has worked with the Ditzel archive to bring an earlier design back as its Ocean outdoor collection, which appears on this site.
